Bessie and Dow completed construction of their home at 408 So. 8th Ave, Yakima, WA, in 1912. |

In 1996, Dow wrote the following in a letter to his cousin, David Dillehay. "My dad served on the Yakima Fire Department for 25 years until his retirement in 1930. We had moved to Wapato, a town about 7 miles from here, in 1929, and he commuted for the last year. My folks had bought a small grocery store, situated across the street from the three schools. They had no cafeterias in the schools in those days, so dad built a lunchroom addition to the store where we served school lunches. The schools even staggered the lunch periods to accommodate us. It was a huge success. Dad died in 1932 and mom kept the store going until 1934, when she sold it and we moved back to Yakima. She operated a small café in Yakima until I graduated from high school in 1941, whereupon we moved to Seattle so I could attend vocational school."
